Ingelheim, Germany, Oxford and Belfast, UK, <\/span>April 29, <\/span>202<\/span>5<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span> Boehringer Ingelheim, the University of Oxford<\/span>,<\/span> and Cumulus Neuroscience are joining forces to provide insights into the <\/span>day-to-day<\/span> experiences of <\/span>people living <\/span>with psychiatric disorders, and how the<\/span>se<\/span> experiences<\/span> relate to their brain activity. The first<\/span>–<\/span>of<\/span>–<\/span>its<\/span>–<\/span>kind study will use novel technology to quantify brain activity, mood<\/span>,<\/span> and behavior at home in people<\/span> <\/span>who have been diagnosed with<\/span> borderline personality disorder (BPD), a<\/span>n <\/span>often neglected<\/span> group of patients. The aim<\/span>s<\/span> <\/span>are<\/span> to <\/span>explore the acceptability <\/span>of this technology in patients and gain <\/span>quantitative<\/span>, fine-grained, <\/span>insights <\/span>that could potent<\/span>ial<\/span>ly guide the research and development of<\/span> <\/span>much-needed new therapies.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Current clinical and lab-based assessments rely on <\/span>retrospective recall <\/span>of symptoms<\/span>. <\/span>They are thus <\/span>limited by how accurately patients <\/span>remember past events<\/span> and<\/span> <\/span>only <\/span>provide a<\/span> snapshot<\/span> in tim<\/span>e<\/span> of a<\/span>n<\/span> <\/span>individual<\/span>s clinical state.<\/span> <\/span>Moreover<\/span>, self-reported<\/span> questionnaires<\/span> <\/span>lack objectivity.<\/span> <\/span>This can lead to an <\/span>incomplete or <\/span>inaccurate picture of the overall experience of the <\/span>individual<\/span> and the failure of new medicines in clinical studies.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Th<\/span>is<\/span> new study aims to change that. It will use Cumulus\u00b4 <\/span>NeuLogiq<\/span><\/span>\u00ae<\/span><\/span> <\/span>neuroassessment<\/span> <\/span>platform <\/span>for the first time in <\/span>people diagnosed with <\/span>borderline personality disorder<\/span>. This platform <\/span>enables the tracking<\/span> of<\/span> <\/span>brain function over time, <\/span>both in <\/span>the <\/span>clinic<\/span>,<\/span> and <\/span>from the comfort of a <\/span>study <\/span>participants home. Participants use a tablet to perform gamified versions of established <\/span>objective<\/span> <\/span>behavioral tasks, while wearing the <\/span>NeuLogiq<\/span> <\/span>headset which records EEG <\/span>(<\/span>electroencephalogram) <\/span>brain waves<\/span> <\/span>that <\/span>are precisely time-synced to the tasks<\/span>.<\/span> The intent is to capture data that will<\/span> provide <\/span>a more <\/span>accurate<\/span> picture of brain network activity.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

In 2019, o<\/span>ne in eight people <\/span>worldwide <\/span>were estimated to be<\/span> living with a mental<\/span> health condition<\/span>, and half of <\/span>the<\/span> adult<\/span> population <\/span>can expect <\/span>to <\/span>experience a mental illness <\/span>by age 75<\/span>.<\/span><\/span>i<\/span><\/span>,<\/span><\/span>ii<\/span><\/span>*<\/span>\u00a0<\/span> People <\/span>diagnosed with severe mental health conditions experience reduced life expectancy relative to the general population, with around 14 years of potential life los<\/span>t<\/span>,<\/span><\/span>1<\/span><\/span> and the economic consequences of mental health conditions <\/span>can be<\/span> enormous.<\/span><\/span>iii<\/span><\/span> Thats why <\/span>Boehringer Ingelheim is embracing Precision Psychiatry. This in-depth research approach delves into the neurobiology of symptoms <\/span>with the goal of <\/span>uncover<\/span>ing<\/span> more targeted <\/span>and holistic <\/span>treatment solutions <\/span>that <\/span>address specific symptoms in people l<\/span>iving serious mental illness <\/span>to help<\/span> <\/span>them to <\/span>live fulfilling lives.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The study<\/span> will be conducted by the Department of Psychiatry of the University of Oxford<\/span> <\/span>at the <\/span>Warneford<\/span> Hospital<\/span>. It<\/span> will <\/span>frequently<\/span> <\/span>collect EEG and behavioral assessments, alongside remote measures of mood and activity. The main aim<\/span>s<\/span> <\/span>are<\/span> to assess the feasibility of using the Cumulus platform in young adults<\/span> aged 18-35<\/span> and <\/span>to <\/span>provide a rich dataset about brain activity and behavior in BPD for in-depth analysis<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span> <\/span>Thirty<\/span> participants who have been diagnosed with BPD and 20 participants with no diagnosed mental health disorder will be recruited.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Dr<\/span>.<\/span> Lauren Atkinson, from the Department of Psychiatry who will be <\/span>s<\/span>e<\/span>n<\/span>ior<\/span> researcher on the study<\/span> says,<\/span> <\/span>W<\/span>e are looking forward to <\/span>working with people diagnosed with borderline personality disorder and <\/span>prioritising<\/span> <\/span>research<\/span> important to <\/span>them. <\/span>One of the key features of a <\/span>BPD<\/span> diagnosis is<\/span> <\/span>affective dysregu<\/span>l<\/span>ation<\/span>. <\/span>By<\/span> <\/span>regularly capturing<\/span> <\/span>mood<\/span>,<\/span> alongside<\/span> <\/span>measures of <\/span>brain <\/span>activity<\/span> <\/span>and cognitive function o<\/span>ver<\/span> an<\/span> <\/span>extended<\/span> <\/span>period of <\/span>time<\/span>,<\/span> we <\/span>hope to better <\/span>capture<\/span> patient experience<\/span> and <\/span>use<\/span> objective <\/span>measures <\/span>to <\/span>understand more about what is happening at those key moments.<\/span><\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
